Taking His Time

Psalm 90:12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. (NRSV)

Things don’t always go according to plan (at least not our plan). And when that happens, we can get impatient – and when we get impatient, invariably we start working against God. Because when things aren’t going according to our plan, chances are they’re going according to His.

Can I tell you, one of my absolute favourite meals is roast lamb. You take the meat, throw in some cloves of garlic, a few sprigs of rosemary, a lemon cut in half, a bit of olive oil, you cover it up and then you slow roast it on a low heat for five to six hours.

Unbelievable. The whole house fills with this stunning fragrance and then you take it out and the meat just falls off the bone. Oh! And the key to the tenderness is the slow roasting. It takes time and patience, but it’s worth the wait.

Sometimes it feels like God’s taking forever to do the things in our lives that we want Him to do. Why can’t He just hurry up? But I guess, as I look back on my life, it’s during those times of “slow roasting”, those times when I’ve been feeling the heat for way too long from where I sit, that my heart’s grown tender towards Him and towards others.

I wonder if God, in His wisdom, isn’t more interested in the sweet fragrance of a tender heart, than He is in meeting our deadlines. His perspective is different to ours because the truth is that our lives on this earth are, in the scheme of things, short and fleeting. Every day matters. Today, tomorrow, the next day … every day.

Psalm 90:12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. (NRSV)

Wisdom is cooperating with God, to make each day count for His glory.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
