SOS

Psalm 25:4,5 Guide me and teach me your truths. You are my God, my Saviour. You are the one I have been waiting for.

Distress comes in many different shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s a dull, chronic ache. Other times, it’s like a dripping tap. And sometimes … sometimes it’s like a train wreck. But whatever form it comes in, dealing with it powerfully and effectively … well, that’s critical.

With mobile communications being what they are these days … I mean, there’s an app for everything right? – the idea of using Morse code seems outrageously primitive. And yet, for many years it was the main form of electronic communications.

Dit-dit-dit dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dit. That’s Morse code – Dit-dit-dit dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dit. It spells out SOS, short for “Save Our Souls.”

Before radio communications as we know them today, ships used Morse code and SOS was the emergency distress signal. Dit-dit-dit dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dit. Primitive to us today, but powerful enough to save lives.

You see a lot of people floundering in stormy waters and crying out, although these days they often turn to drugs or money or violence. In other words, they’re in distress but they’re crying out for help in the wrong direction. Sometimes it’s loud and extreme, other times just a quiet sobbing inside. Either way, it’s self-destructive.

I used to wonder why those Christians called Jesus their Saviour. What a weird name, I used to think. Until one day – I felt that same distress call in my heart.

Dit-dit-dit dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dit. I was drowning and I needed help. That doesn’t mean I was a loser. I just think there’s a God-sized hole inside each one of us – this huge emptiness – and however much we try to deny it, there’s only one way to fill it.

Psalm 25:5
Guide me and teach me your truths. You are my God, my Saviour. You are the one I have been waiting for.

Crying out to God … well, that’s something that you’ll never, ever regret. God … Save Our Souls.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
