Making the Connection

1 Samuel 2:30 I will honour people who honour me, but bad things will happen to those who refuse to respect me.

Often we wonder why this or that in our life isn’t working out all that well … we do, don’t we? But rarely, if ever, do we make the connection between our rebellion against God – our disobedience in one part of our lives, and the mess in another part.

It’s funny how some things that Christians believe seem so incredibly old-fashioned – like a man and a woman not sleeping together before they’re married. I mean, really … in this day and age?!

Back when my wife Jacqui and I met, we were in our late thirties – and just quietly, she is drop-dead gorgeous! So it would have been the easiest thing in the world just to move in together – it’s just what people do. In any case, we’d bought our house three months before the wedding and we couldn’t afford to pay both the mortgage on the new house and the rent on my old apartment. So, what do you do?

Well, Jacqui moved into the new house, and I asked around at our church. Get this … a retired couple, Ken and Jean, were planning a tour of Europe. They’d booked their tickets months before. It turns out that they were scheduled to leave on the very day that our house settled. And their return date? Five am on the morning of our wedding. And yes, they were delighted to have me mind their house for free.

Now go on … tell me that that’s old fashioned. Tell me that God wasn’t in that.

1 Samuel 2:30 I will honour people who honour me, but bad things will happen to those who refuse to respect me.

The moment we wrap our minds around that, the moment we start living a life that honours God, His help, His blessing, His power gets poured out on us in abundance.

Honour God, and He will honour you.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
