Fact Checking

John 16:13,14 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words. He will speak only what he hears and will tell you what will happen in the future. The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me by telling you what he receives from me.

Fake news is not merely a political cliché. It’s a profound problem – with bad actors, as they’re called, and even rogue governments deliberately undermining social cohesion by fabricating lies on a mass scale.

Social media’s made that possible because of the lack of accountability that free speech on those platforms affords. In response to that, some (notably Facebook, but others too) have put “fact-checking” regimes into place.

The problem is that, in this day and age, truth is very much in the eye of the beholder, so the political and ideological perspective of the so-called fact-checkers is seen by many as just another dimension of the fake news problem.

So, how do those of us who believe in Jesus makes sense of what truth really is? This is how He put it:

John 16:13,14 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words. He will speak only what he hears and will tell you what will happen in the future. The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me by telling you what he receives from me.

It’s so easy to get caught up in this ideology over here or that dogma over there, to the point where many Christians define themselves more by their political leanings than they do through what Jesus taught.

If He truly is the Lord of our lives, then His Word must be supreme, His Spirit of truth must reign in our hearts and minds, and His throne is the one throne at which our knees must bow.

Allow the Spirit of truth to glorify Him in your life, as you forsake all else.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
