Believing Close Up

Romans 10:9 … because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (NRSV)

One of the things that I find incredibly scary is just how many people breeze through Easter without giving it a second thought; without even realising that how they respond will have everything to do with how they spend the rest of eternity.

Easter comes with an important message. Jesus died for you and me on a cross, He rose again and if we believe that He is the Son of God, that His death and resurrection actually happened and that through those God forgives us, then we are forgiven and we have the gift of eternal life.

It’s a pretty simple proposition. The question is – what do you believe?

It seems to me that it’s easy to believe all that stuff from a safe distance of two thousand years. It’s almost like folklore – you’ve heard it so many times that you just kind of accept it. But let me ask you something. What do you really believe? If the death and resurrection of Jesus had happened, say, last week instead of two thousand years ago, would you still believe?

And I’m not talking here about a kind of tacit agreement to a fairy tale, but an actual belief deep in your heart that Jesus died and rose again for you. What do you believe?

It makes a difference, a big difference …

Romans 10:9 … because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (NRSV)

But of course, the flip side of that is that if you don’t, you won’t.

So, let me come back to asking you – What do you say? What do you believe? – because your answer before God, and openly before others, has everything to do with how you’ll spend the rest of your eternity.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
